Filipinos advised: Hand wash with soap frequently to prevent measles

Filipinos are urged to be vigilant in protecting themselves against measles, following the Department of Health’s declaration of a measles outbreak in the National Capital Region, other areas of Luzon, and Central Eastern Visayas.

Data from the DOH Epidemiology Bureau showed over 800 measles cases in Metro Manila in the first month of the year. The number of measles cases in the country has been on an uptrend, with 3,646 cases recorded in 2018 compared to just 351 in 2017 – a ten-fold increase.

Measles is a highly contagious but preventable disease that is transferred from one person to another through sneezing, coughing, and personal contact. Its symptoms include coughing, a runny nose, red eyes, fever, diarrhea, and a distinctive red rash that spreads all over the body.
Its complications, which can be fatal, include ear infections, blindness, swelling of the brain, and pneumonia. In fact, measles is one of the top causes of death among children below the age of 5.

Because of the seriousness of the disease, individuals should proactively take steps to protect themselves against it. Apart from vaccination, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCP) recommends:

● Frequent handwashing
● Not touching the eyes, nose, and mouth
● Covering the mouth when coughing or sneezing
● Avoiding close contact and sharing utensils with people who are sick

Handwashing can play a major role in helping prevent the transmission of the measles virus. According to the Global Handwashing Partnership, “Handwashing protection works by removing the tiny droplets containing the measles virus from your hands before they get a chance to infect
you or transfer to someone else”.

Handwashing with a trusted soap like Safeguard is able to remove 99.9% of germs. Make sure that as you lather, you thoroughly scrub and cover all parts of the hand with soap. Then rinse your hands with water. With regular handwashing with soap, Safeguard is a cost-effective and easy measure to help prevent the spread of the disease.By taking a proactive and vigilant
stance through vaccination, handwashing, and the tips above, the battle against measles can be won. If your child or family members are showing these symptoms, it is also recommended to visit your nearest health center or family doctor.

Novelina Zeelke Cream Hair Color

Last December 2, I decided to give hair coloring a try. I really don’t want anything to do with my hair except cut it short. My hair has always been a virgin when it comes to hair coloring, rebonding, etc. It experienced totally nothing. (Sounds boring??? Hehe)

As I am very much “afraid” of having to put chemicals to my hair, I checked what makes Novelina an exception among the rest. I am not familiar with the Novelina cosmetics, aside from haircare products would you believe it also has skincare products too?

For the HAIRCARE, they have 2 kinds of hair colors. The Novelina Zeelke Cream Hair Color with KERATIN and Zeelke HERBAL Cream Hair Color. Yes ladies! Herbal hair color is available. This may be used by those who are sensitive to harsh chemicals especially on their scalp. While Novelina with KERATIN gives your hair that shiny look and emphasizes your hair color.

They have 8 color variations to choose from, Natutal Black, Asian Black, Dark Brown, Brown, Chestnut Brown, Golden Brown, Crimson Red and Burgundy.

For me I chose the one with Keratin. Why? Since I have normal hair, I thought adding color into it will make my hair cry. So maybe it won’t get dry if I chose the one with Keratin. 🙂

MY EXPERIENCE

When I arrived at their stall at Cash & Carry Makati, I was greeted by one of their staff while she was busy washing another customer’s hair. She let me had a seat first until she is done with her first customer. Once done, it’s my turn. 😀 I was really confused on which color to apply to my hair. I don’t think that Red would be nice since of my morena complexion. I was to go with Burgundy but their friendly staff, Miss Jo, suggested me using the Chestnut Brown since my hair is very black. Burgundy won’t be noticed on my hair unlike chestnut brown. And so coloring begins. I was really excited on what the outcome would be, and posted pics and short videos on my IG Story.

The hair color application was easy. For my hair length she used 2 boxes. What’s cute is that each box comes with a little brush. 🙂 I wasn’t able to take a picture of it. After the application they have me waited for 45 minutes before rinsing it. I enjoyed rinsing time though. 🙂 I was worried there would be visible hair color on my forehead and scalp but there were none.

Now is your turn to give your hair a twist and try different hair color. Novelina is giving FREE APPLICATION with a single purchase of hair color. Head on over to Cash & Carry Makati 2nd floor Department Store (near cinemas). Catch them until December 28, 2018. I’d love to see your hair transformations. 🙂

Mommy Veni & Raix at the PediaSure Plus OMG Park

Abbott Introduces PediaSure ® Plus #OhMyGrowth (OMG) Park to Provide Educational Experience on Children’s Growth and Development
The PediaSure Plus #OhMyGrowth Park roadshow launches, running from November to December, starting with Festival Mall, Alabang

Parents always want the best for their children and ensuring their growth and development is no exception. For this reason, parents like to know if their children are growing at the right height and want to make sure that they are eating the best foods to stay active and healthy as they grow.

As for me, with my 2 girls, I really never had worries if they are of right height and weight during their formative years. I was quite contented with how tall they are & their body weight. But with my youngest, it seems that I wanted to give him everything just to make sure he grows up tall and of right weight. Lucky for me, he is growing up tall and is active and healthy.

Some of those we just met always asks what age he is, when I answer back, they’d be surprised and the frequent response is, “He’s big for his age.” I’ve seen kids his age kind of short for their age and is wondering why? Was it because of their parents’ hormones? Or they lack enough sleeping hours? Or maybe it’s with their milk?

To help encourage parents to properly measure their children in order to recognize signs of nutritional inadequacy and keep their growth on track, Abbott is launching the PediaSure Plus #OhMyGrowth (OMG) Park across a number of locations in the Philippines. The park offers a fun and interactive experience for parents and children over three years old. Featuring checkpoints for height, weight and immunity, the park is designed to educate parents on their children’s nutrition and growth development, while letting the kids enjoy fun-filled activities. Currently in Festival Mall, Alabang from Nov. 17-18, 2018, the park is also scheduled to be at: SM City Pampanga on Dec. 8-9 and SM Southmall, Las Piñas on Dec. 15-16.

Complete and balanced nutrition is important for a child’s growth

The first five years is a critical window in a child’s life for bone growth, with 60 percent of a child’s adult height attributed to growth at this stage. However, this period is also the time when a child is most likely to encounter barriers to growth such as poor nutrition, feeding difficulties or frequent illnesses. It is important to ensure that a child is getting a complete and balanced nutrition as they grow and that appropriate nutrition is introduced in time so that the child can stay on track in achieving his full growth potential.

An oral nutritional supplement like PediaSure Plus can help provide the proper nutrition a child needs by helping to fill nutritional gaps. PediaSure Plus is clinically proven, with 37 growth nutrients and triple protein complex, to support muscle and bone growth. A clinical study among Filipino children showed that drinking two servings of PediaSure Plus with
three balanced meals everyday resulted in visible growth within eight weeks — and helped to improve appetite, weight and height, reduced sick days, and sustained proportional growth.

Dr. Jose Rodolfo Dimaano Jr. – medical director at Abbott explains: “To support their overall growth and development, children require complete and balanced nutrition. PediaSure Plus provides essential macronutrients and micronutrients needed by a child to stay healthy and well-nourished. Its consistent use helps children to meet their dietary requirements of key
nutrients for growth. This is especially important because many Filipinos are deficient in nutrients such as calcium, iron, vitamin A and C – all needed to support the optimal growth of children.”

At the launch event, celebrity mom Melissa Ricks – mother to three-year-old Keira, spoke about the importance of ensuring optimum nutrition with PediaSure Plus: “It was hard to make sure Keira was getting all the nutrition she needs when she was growing up because of her food preferences. But she loves the taste of PediaSure Plus – especially the chocolate one!
With her having that twice a day, I can rest assured that she’s getting the proper nutrition she needs for her health and growth development – boosting her height, weight and immunity. It really helps me to make sure she is eating right, even on the busy days.”

If you mommies need to learn more about PediaSure you may check my blog soon. 🙂

#ShareAMomentOfJoy Short Film Series Touches on Heartfelt Family Moments

When dinner time conversations end, real ones begin:
Joy pays a heartfelt tribute to the unconditional family love that surrounds Christmas reunion dinners

This Christmas, the season of family reunions; Joy, the Philippines’ leading dishwashing liquid; releases two short films that seek to encourage more meaningful exchanges between family members by showing how a chore as mundane as dishwashing is perfect for a more intimate form of bonding. Whereas dinner conversations are great for finding out how everyone is doing, it may not be as conducive to ironing out sensitive issues as a quiet chore done by two people helping each other out. By focusing on this powerful moment and revealing its essential role in family life, Joy celebrates the unconditional love that Pinoy parents have for their children, one that will triumph over life’s hardest challenges.

Modern, authentic scenes of parenting love.

In the “OFW” short film, the brand highlights how OFW parents struggle with the effects of distance and time away from their loved ones, imposed on them by their sacrifice to work overseas.

In the second film entitled “Daughter”, Joy celebrates the love of a father for his daughter, regardless of her life choices that challenge conventions.

Joy salutes the sacrifice of OFWs and parents in an exceptionally realistic and relatable way.

Created by Publicis Singapore for P&G, the two films are a departure from Joy’s usual comedic and light-hearted stories, with a more earnest and true-to-life portrayal of family struggles. “OFW” pays homage to heroes often honored, but unfortunately not always understood by their family. It recognizes that for both the OFW and family, homecoming can be bittersweet, but the small everyday moments spent together can help to heal wounds and create precious memories.

When dinner time conversations end, real ones begin.

“Through this film, we want to salute the sacrifices done by our modern-day heroes, while also putting focus on the magic behind appreciating those times where one lets their guard down and can be very candid and open. While we recognize that dinner serves as a great way to gather families together, it also rings true for many families that bonding moments can’t be forced. In many cases, when dinner ends, real conversations start. What matters is truly embracing every moment spent together, and choosing to #ShareAMomentOfJoy,” shares Michael Jonathan Biscocho, Brand Manager, P&G APAC Dish Care.

Noel Orosa, Regional Group Creative Director, Publicis Singapore, adds “While the dinner table is great for bonding the entire family together, we saw dishwashing as a safe alternative space for a family to have real one-on-one conversations. It’s a chore that two family members can do together, which is free from the distractions of mobile devices and everyday family life. For more than two decades now, Joy has been a ubiquitous presence on the Filipino family’s dishwashing sink, which is why it is in the best position to do this advocacy campaign. This marks a new era for Joy thanks to the brave, progressive leadership of the Joy Brand Team.”

What is Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease or COPD?

8 Things You Need To Know About COPD

1. COPD is a leading cause of death worldwide

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, and the World Health Organization estimates that 3 million deaths were caused by the disease in 2015, which represents 5% of all deaths globally. By 2020, it is estimated to be the third leading cause of death worldwide.

2. COPD is a seldom discussed, underdiagnosed disease

As compared to other leading causes of death such as heart disease, stroke and cancer, COPD is a seldom-discussed disease and many people are unaware of what COPD is. The disease is among the most common, most underdiagnosed, most debilitating, most deadly and most costly to manage.

3. There are a shocking number of people who remain undiagnosed

While an estimated 210 million people worldwide estimated to have COPD, 2 less than half have actually been diagnosed.

4. In the Philippines, COPD remains a serious disease

COPD is one of the 10 leading causes of death in the Philippines. It has a prevalence rate of 14% among Filipino adults aged 40 and above. Only 2% of the cases are diagnosed by doctors in contrast to the overall prevalence.

5. COPD is not a curable disease, but it can be managed

COPD as a disease cannot be cured, but the good news is that there are available treatment options that can greatly improve the quality of life of patients, which include pharmacotherapies and nebulizes to deliver drugs. Besides these, long-term oxygen therapy and non-invasive ventilation (NIV) therapy options also help patients cope with the disease and reduce hospitalization rates.

6. One’s risk of COPD increases with age

COPD develops slowly and becomes more apparent after 40 or 50 years of age. It is a progressive lung disease that makes it hard to breathe (or even blow a pinwheel), with symptoms that include breathlessness, chronic cough or sputum production.

7. Non-smokers can also be at risk of COPD

While perceived to be a “smoker’s disease”, non-smokers can also develop COPD due to environmental factors. Exposure to tobacco smoke, air pollution, or noxious particles or gases from biomass fuels increases the risk of developing COPD. Those living in Asia Pacific are also at risk due to the region’s rapid development, with 56.6 million are afflicted with moderate to severe COPD in Asia.

8. Those with COPD should know that there are ways to help them stay active

COPD patients can, with the right treatment and therapy, continue their way of life. Russell Winwood, a renowned COPD athlete and Philips ambassador, completed his first full Ironman just six months after his diagnosis, despite the fact that his lungs function at only 22%.

Mommy Veni Joins the National Pampering Day by Nailaholics Salon and Spa

Last October 2017, I got invited by Nailaholics Salon and Spa to join their second year anniversary of National Pampering Day. As I have heard, their introduction last 2016 was a huge success. That is why I grabbed the chance to join them on their 2nd year. It would also be a great opportunity to bond with my girls.

Sitting next to my girls as we get pampered.

The branch closest to us is the one at Glorietta, Makati City. My girls and I came in just in time and there are no long lines yet. We were greeted by their friendly staff and was introduced to the services they are offering. There are packages for hand care, foot care and all-in packages like the Lush Lagoon, Color my Cabana and a lot more. They also offer nail extension, nail art, eyelash extension, threading and waxing.

Greeted by these and assisted me in choosing the right package for me.

As of writing, I already forgot the package I chose but I have them do both, hand and foot care. For my girls, they got to experience the free service offered by Nailaholics for the National Pampering Day, they chose the soothing manicure.

So many colors to choose from.

5 star For the VENUE – it was very relaxing and peaceful, clean and well ventilated.

4 stars For the STAFF – they were very friendly and accommodating, especially the nail technicians. The salon is prepared for their big event, they have enough number of manpower to render services to customers as the count goes high.

4 stars For their SERVICE – they gave us our well-deserved pampering though I think they can do more. I felt they are slightly in a hurry, maybe because it’s past lunch time already.

You may check out our short video to see a glimpse of what happens during Nailaholics’ National Pampering Day.

Our over-all experience was a blast! Our mother-daughters bonding time was superb! We couldn’t have thought of anywhere to get pampered and have fun than in Nailaholics Salon and Spa. We hope to get invited again on their 3rd year anniversary.

Thank you so much Nailaholics! 🙂

Acts of Kindness Hosts Art Exhibit Benefiting Smile Train, the World’s Leading Cleft Charity

On July 19, Acts of Kindness and Solaire Resorts and Casino unveiled, “A Celebration of Smiles: Creating smiles and second chances at life through art,” an art exhibit benefiting Smile Train, the world’s leading cleft charity. The exhibit is being held at Solaire’s The Shoppes Artway.

The exhibit features artwork by local and international artists, and some of Smile Train’s former cleft patients. The artwork will be available for sale until September 2 and will help raise funds and awareness for children with clefts in the Philippines.

“We are grateful that Acts of Kindness is hosting this art exhibit to help raise awareness for Smile Train and our local programs here in the Philippines. Through this initiative, not only is Acts of Kindness able to showcase local and international talent, they are also able to help create a brighter future for children born with clefts,” said Kimmy Coseteng-Flaviano, Area Director for Smile Train in Southeast Asia.

A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Smile Train to help fund various local programs to provide free cleft surgery and comprehensive cleft care for Filipinos.

Artworks by Mr. Roberto Sanchez.

The art exhibit showcases pieces from Roberto Sanchez, a DJ and entrepreneur by trade, but creatively a self-taught artist. Sanchez works are primarily expressionistic, dramatic portraits replete with distorted, thick lines and incongruous forming gnarly surfaces of painted faces.

This artist duly approaches his paintings with a process that aims to capture the essence of the portrait subjects. While he technically addresses physicality and form, he is keenly interested to understand and capture in his canvas real presences from his subjects.

Celebrating Smiles Through Art Danger Sanchez
Mr. Roberto Sanchez himself.

He takes particular cue with the eyes which for him spells and define the character of the subjects. And even if the frames are still unfinished, they already evoke such entrancing stillness, energies, and completeness. They have the ability to charm and confuse.

Sanchez finds affirmation when his painted subjects find themselves in his works as they connect with their painted likeness in canvas.

Artworks by Jon Ray Fernandez.

Jon Ray Fernandez is an airline professional turned mixed media artist. A self-taught visual artist, Fernandez started off with zero art education since it never occurred to him that art could possibly be a career.

Originally from Bacolod City, he left the country to travel the world. After being based in London and the Middle East for a number of years, he came back to the Philippines in 2015 with plans to continue his aviation career. Eventually, he stumbled upon the world of art and there found his true calling.

Celebrating Smiles Through Art Jon Ray Fernandez
Mr. Jon Ray Fernandez himself.

As a visual artist, his main objective is to bring beauty and fun back into local art. He started posting his works on social media, gaining a fan base around the globe. With Pedro Almodovar, muse Rosie De Palma, and actress Emmanuele Beart admiring his works, this led to patrons buying his pieces.
Camy Cabral, a full-time artist with a background in design and advertising; and Albrecht Behmel, an award-winning artist and best-selling writer whose works have been shown in Paris, Beijing, New York, Moscow and London. Despite coming from different backgrounds with different styles of artwork, these artists came together to offer their pieces all for a good cause.

Apart from the seasoned artists, some of the artwork is from Smile Train’s former cleft patients including: Julia Robert Capili, Angel Ibo, Pearl Angeli Miranda, Jervy Hobo and Nickson Cabote. Having interacted with the guests, these individuals have shown how far they’ve come since their initial cleft surgery.

“We hope that we can continue to raise awareness for children with clefts in the Philippines and all over the world through these small acts of kindness,” says Flaviano. “We want to continue to spread smiles and encourage others to do the same.”
